Micha is dead

13 years after catching measles from an unvaccinated pre-teen in his pediatrician's waiting room and almost 9 years after the onset of SSPE, Micha has passed away. My heart goes out to his parents, Oxana and Peter, to his three brothers and to the countless people who loved Micha and whose hearts he touched!

ETA: you may leave condolences. I will not tolerate discussion in this thread.

  1. That is so sad. SSPE is one of those complications that I fear every time I hear of any case of measles, even if the patient recovers without any apparent complications. My heart goes out to the family.

  3. Anonymouse: "Were all those in the clinic who got infected with measles (including the deceased RIP) had previous measles vaccination?"

Try reading for comprehension. Micha was four months old, and Natalie was eleven months old. Measles vaccination does not occur until after their first birthday. Now, in case you missed this bit in 1st grade arithmetic: one year as twelve months. That is more than both four and eleven.

Second Anonymous, the all of the recent outbreaks of measles in the USA come from people who have chosen to not vaccinate with the MMR. And in the last outbreaks the vast majority that they infect were also not vaccinated.

And if you really want to claim you are weighing in with the "relative risks", then you should pony up the PubMed indexed study from a reputable researcher (not Wakefield and friends) that the American MMR vaccine that has been in use since 1971 is more dangerous than measles, mumps and rubella.

    1. Oh, I guess the foolish anonymice were removed because they said something annoying. Just as they were warned, and it removed the whole thread.

I am so sorry for that family. They are the true victims of Wakefield's research fraud.

    2. I am currently writing an article for a socialist magazine in NZ - the target audience being lots of "radical" hippie-types who are against vaccination.

I shall include a detailed description of the pseudoscience and fraud in Wakefield's Lancet paper, and debunk many myths for those parents woh are not necessarily anti-vaccinationists but are genuinely concerned and bewildered by contradictions in information available to them.

Wish me luck to spread the word and ensure vaccination for all!

      Much love,

      Nat

  6. That Christmas picture is so sweet, with the dad holding Micha. My heart breaks for their loss, and the years they spent dealing with the effects of measles.

I know there nothing anyone can say to help, but they have my sincerest condolences.

  7. I am so sorry for this family. I lost an aunt to polio, and my father was named after his uncle who died from polio as a baby. It is terrible that anti-vaccination foolishness is killing children.
